Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

New Goldfrapp album Seventh Tree starts slowly. Like watching a flower growing,  the songs play softly. It sounded quite dull at my first listen. However, I love their most of the previous songs. It is up to you like this album or not. Because Goldfrapp warned us on their myspace:

"It's very different to [2005's] 'Supernature,' so it might come as a bit of a shock to some of you," said Goldfrapp's Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory on the band's MySpace page. "We had fun making it and loved doing something that is in complete contrast to the last album, even though sometimes it took a bit of courage to steer as far away as we did on some of the tunes."

'loved doing something that is in complete contrast'
This sentence makes me worried. It sounds to me that their songs can be something you may not like. I can only disappoint you, but in my opinion Seventh Tree sucks. Everyone is different. So, you decide if you like it or not.  However, I loved the two songs  'Cologne Cerrone Houdini' and the closing track 'Clowns'.
By the way, The first single to be taken from the new Goldfrapp album Seventh Tree is A&E.

YOU'LL NEED TO REMOVE THESE MP3S IMMEDIATELY OR RISK LEGAL ACTION FROM EMI

I agree, I was expecting much better.

What a shame.

You close-minded fools. I bet you only listened to it once, it is a demanding and ultimately rewarding album, and just cause it aint some dancy album doesnt mean that its bad...

dull music!

Seventh Tree takes a little getting used to if you're a Goldfrapper but it's worth the effort. It certainly doesn't suck. If ANYTHING sucks it's the dimwit who wrote this review.

That's pretty funny to hear considering it's not even the same genre. Goldfrapp = Electonica, Seventh Tree = Lilith Fair. I shouldn't have to get used to it, I should love every minute of it from the start. The album should come out exploding with digital sound and catchy choruses, not ambient droning and sleepy mumbling vocals. They can do better than this...

This album is completely amazing...I love all of Goldfrapp's work and find many of my favorite themes from the past albums in this new album...I agree with the earlier poster that it is a demanding album, and an incredibly rewarding one!

Honey, I think you should take a lesson in writing. I'm not taking advice from a person whose grammar level is that of a 5 year old.

Goldfrapp does not equal electronica.

Why don't you listen to their first album...

Seventh Tree sounds -exactly- like their first album...which is what made them so popular in the first place.

And it's a gorgeous sound. Get over yourself.

"Seventh Tree sounds -exactly- like their first album...which is what made them so popular in the first place. "

snore.... unfortunately that's wrong. Their first album never made it very high on the charts and didn't sell nearly as well as the follow up albums. Felt Mountain is a snorefest.

Black Cherry on the other hand WAS their breakthrough album, selling over platinum... AND... wait for it... rose to the top of the Billboard Electonica charts! Imagine that?! Yes. Any popularity has come from their electronica... the rest is very forgettable.

what a shame, i was really expecting a good album and this is boring. oh well, i'll just have to wait for the next one.

Buddy I'm not sure what you're smoking, but it's gotta be affecting your ears!! The first track "Clowns" is playing on Sirius and it's seriously one of the most beautifully arranged and hauntily fluid songs I've heard in years....can't wait to hear the rest of the album....

Oh yeah man, the song is killer! I especially love the part where it rocks so hard I almost forget what the band used to sound like!!!

sucks...

Are you serious? This is so much better than their last album. Something being popular does not make it the stronger competitor, as you believe with Supernature or Black Cherry compared with Felt Mountain. That debut album was so amazing, and this new one hints at it a lot but in an advanced way. They are channeling that album, along with how they've honed the electronic aspects of their music.

What! do i have to scream that i already said "Clowns" is amazing song! do not teach to me what i have to say. It's an avarage record for me, i know that after one month, you'll never play it again. It can't reach any gold status, are you deaf? Felt Mountain is the only remarkable Goldfrapp record.

horrible on the first listen. A&E is the only good song here. Ill listen to it a few more times but this is just as bad as supernature is good.

goldfrapp what are you doing? you found your sound and it was awesome.. why are you reverting?

it isnt even a good revert.

Lets be honest here shall we?

they become much more electronic which sky-rocketed their popularity and now that everyone knows who they are they are reverting to old styles so people will like that as well.

they failed.

first two albums I liked.. this one is just plain and simply BORING. I was almost asleep by song #3.

They can stream all they want and it's not going to make the album any better... I take their comments of "we tried really hard to fight our instincts making the album" to mean "we created a turd that vaguely resembles any of our popular work, but our true fans will listen to anything we give them". Blah. This album is easily forgotten and I wouldn't be surprised to see them suddenly "reverting" to what made them popular in the first place.

I love love love Goldfrapp but I have to admit this new album is pretty um mediocre. Felt Mountain and Black Cherry were fucking mind-blowing albums but Supernature was just good and this new album is just ok. It sounds to me like they were trying really hard to be mainstream. There's a few good songs here and there but I like what the pitchfork media review said.... how the weirdness is just completely absent except for a couple of songs. To those who say this album is like Felt Mountain, you are high on crack, this album is in no way ANYTHING like Felt Mountain.

this might sound odd, but goldfrapp meant nothing to me (never heard of 'em, but then again i don't get time to listen to music - 40 with 4 kids) until i bought this album, which i condsider to be excellent. i'm a professional musician and teacher and actually was on the same music degree course as Will Gregory in York, and I LOVE this album. i then listened to the glam rock stuff of previous albums and found it derivative to the extreme and actually trite. looks like i'm n a minority then, but as they say the only good music is the stuff you like, it's pointless trying to convince someone else. well, back to bathing my baby - oh, he was digging Caravan Girl, but then he's two.

If anything a change was due! Given the striking contrast between the first two albums, I was worried when Supernature started off sounding like a poptastic extension of Black Cherry.. Had they got a bit lazy? I stand corrected as under the sheen were many hidden depths. I'm expecting the same from Seventh Tree (though the sheen is different). Will Gregory is a genius and Alison Goldfrapp is an incredible front lady.

To the naysayers: It clearly ain't a pop record. Get over it. Chart position doesn't have anything to do with its meaning to my life as it shouldn't to yours, you small minded p****s

Personally, I wasnt expecting this albulm to be so "mellow" and subtle as it is.

However it certainly grows on you and the track, "Little Bird" is haunting- especially at the end.

Overall a perfect chill-out albulm imo.
