Tindersticks is the name of a baroque rock band from Nottingham, England. Their sound is characterized by a synthesis of orchestral backing, lounge jazz, and soul; the lush orchestrations of multi-instrumentalist Dickon Hinchliffe and the smoky baritone of lead vocalist Stuart Staples are the band's hallmarks. Tindersticks have employed electric guitars, as most rock bands have done, but augment their instrumentation with a wide array of instruments: Rhodes piano, glockenspiel, vibraphone, violin, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, bassoon, Hammond organ, and many more are prominently utilized in the music of Tindersticks. The band has a fanatical following in the United Kingdom and continental Europe, although the eclectic and unique sound Tindersticks possesses understandably never made significant inroads in the mainstram.

The band was formed in London, England in 1976, by Mike Barson (Monsieur Barso) on keyboards and vocals, Chris Foreman (Chrissy Boy) on guitar and Lee Thompson (Kix) on saxophone and vocals under the name The North London Invaders. In 1978 they were joined by frontman Graham McPherson (Suggs) on vocals, Mark Bedford (Bedders) on bass guitar and Daniel Woodgate (Woody) on drums. After performing periodically as The North London Invaders the group changed their name to Madness. Carl Smyth (Chas Smash) on trumpet and vocals, joined in early 1980.

The band's first single, released September 1st 1979 on The Specials' 2 Tone label, was "The Prince". The song, written by Lee Thompson, was a tribute to the Jamaican ska musician Prince Buster, whose song, "Madness", the band had named themselves after and which also was released as the B-side of "The Prince". This was followed by the album One Step Beyond... in 1979, named after another Prince Buster song, which stayed in the British charts for over a year, peaking at number 2. One Step Beyond... was released on Stiff Records, which became the band's recording label. From 1979 through 1988, the band released 25 singles and eight albums (including two compilation albums) in the UK. During the early 1980's Madness was one of the most popular bands in Britain. In 1984 the band formed their own record label; Zarjazz Records. The album "Mad Not Mad" was the first Madness album released on this label, in 1985.

One Step Beyond... is the 1979 debut album by the British ska group Madness. The album is often regarded as their best album. It was ranked 90th in a 2005 survey held by British television's Channel 4 to determine the 100 greatest albums of all time. The album peaked at number 2 and remained in the British record charts for over a year.

The title track, an instrumental, was released as a single and was originally written and recorded by the Jamaican ska musician Prince Buster. Madness had to date released one previous single; "The Prince" / "Madness".

Parklife is a Britpop album by the band Blur, released on April 25, 1994.

Blur's sketches of British life among ordinary men and women prompted many reviewers to compare the band to The Kinks. Robyn Hitchcock (born March 3, 1953) is a rock and roll singer-songwriter and psych folk artist.

Born in London, he began his recording career in 1976 with the Cambridge-based band The Soft Boys. In 1981 the band broke up and Hitchcock embarked upon his distinguished solo career, recording both under his own name and as Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians (which includes Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor from The Soft Boys).

Hitchcock's musical and lyrical styles have drawn influence from his appreciation of Bob DylanSyd Barrett. His tendency for irreverent-sounding delivery has led to critics misunderstanding him as a purely novelty/comic lyricist. Many of the sentiments within his writing are actually quite serious in themselves, only framed in an unpretentious, whimsical manner. and

A lifelong Dylan fan, Hitchcock's 2002 album Robyn Sings is an album of Bob Dylan song covers including a live recording of his recreation of Dylan's Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1966 concert.

Also in 2002, Hitchcock re-united with Kimberley Rew and Windsor for The Soft Boys release of Nextdoorland.

Hitchcock has collaborated with film director Jonathan Demme on two projects: the live concert film Storefront Hitchcock (1998) and the 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate, in which Hitchcock portrayed double-agent Laurent Tokar.

Additionally, Hitchcock has a keen interest in abstract art and literature, writes short stories and draws (often in a whimsical cartoon style).

Elliott Smith (August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003) was an American songwriter and musician. He rose to prominence when his song "Miss Misery", which he wrote for the movie Good Will Hunting, was nominated for an Oscar in the best original song category in 1998.

Figure 8 (2000) is the name of the fifth album recorded by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith.

The album, released on DreamWorks Records on April 18, 2000, was Smith's second release on a major label. It was recorded at Sunset Sound in New York, Sonora Studios in Los Angeles, Capitol Studios in Hollywood, and Abbey Road Studios in London ("Stupidity Tries", "In the Lost And Found (Honky Bach)" and "Pretty Mary K").

The wall Smith is standing in front of in Autumn DeWilde's photograph on the cover of his Figure 8 album actually exists, and since his death it has become a memorial to him. It is covered with graffiti and written messages containing lyrics and personal messages to Smith. It is located at 4334 W. Sunset Boulevard, which is a store by the name of "Audio-Video Solutions", just south of the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fountain Avenue.

Turn on the Bright Lights was New York City rock band Interpol's first full-length album. It was released in 2002 on Matador Records to a great deal of critical acclaim and sold exceptionally well for an indie release. It also ranked highly on the yearly lists of many rock critics'.

Musically, many have pointed out the similarities between Turn on the Bright Lights and the 1970s group Joy Division. Both groups make heavy use of drums, often as the lead instrument in a song, and the lead singer of Interpol, Paul Banks, has a somewhat similar voice in tone to that of Joy Division's Ian Curtis.

Antics is the second album by New York City-based band Interpol, released on September 28, 2004 (see 2004 in music). Although more confident than its predecessor,Turn on the Bright Lights, it largely repeats the same formula of sparse arrangement driven by bass throb and strong drums, with powerful, evocative lyrics sung in a resonant, mordant voice by vocalist Paul Banks and intricate guitar lines.

The album was reissued in August 2005 in the United States with a bonus disc that contained four remixes by the band, a b-side, and the videos for all three singles.

Interpol is a New York City indie rock band formed in 1998. Their debut album Turn on the Bright Lights was critically acclaimed, while the follow-up, Antics, has also been a commercial and critical success. The members of the band are Paul Banks on vocals and guitar, Carlos Dengler on bass and keyboards, Sam Fogarino on drums, and Daniel Kessler on guitar and background vocals.

The band's sound is a dark mix of bass throb and choppy, sparse guitar. Turn on the Bright Lights was spare and tentative, but their second album Antics embraced a fuller, more confident sound. Both Antics and Turn on the Bright Lights were recorded at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The band formed when Daniel Kessler met drummer Greg Drudy, now a member of screamo band Hot Cross, on the New York University campus. Kessler later added Carlos D., an ex-guitarist, on the bass, after meeting him in a history class. The line-up was complete after Kessler remembered an old friend he met while in Paris. Banks and Kessler ran into each other on the street, after losing touch since Paris, and Banks became lead singer. In 2000, Greg left the band, and Daniel recruited Sam, whom the band knew through his job at a local record store.

The band will take time off after their Antics tour for an unknown amount of time. A new song by the band, 'Direction' was released on the soundtrack to the television program 'Six Feet Under' on June 28, 2005. In addition to this, their music has also been used in a soundtrack to popular teen drama 'The OC.'

The film centres on the relationship between Oliver (played by Kutcher) and Emily (played by Peet), who first met on a flight from Los Angeles to New York seven years ago, only to decide that they were poorly suited together.

Over the next seven years they keep meeting each other, becoming acquaintances and then close friends; going through different partners and careers at the same time.

With each of them suffering through one failed relationship after another, they finally figure out after seven years that they might be right for each other after all.

Formation (1980-1982)

R.E.M. formed at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, in January 1980. Discovering they had similar tastes, vocalist Michael Stipe (born January 4, 1960 in Decatur, Georgia) and guitarist Peter Buck (born December 6, 1956 in Berkeley, California) began working together, eventually meeting bassist Mike Mills (born December 17, 1958 in Orange County, California) and drummer Bill Berry (born July 31, 1958 in Duluth, Minnesota). In April 1980, the band formed under the name Twisted Kites to play a birthday party for their friend Kathleen O'Brien, rehearsing a number of garage, psychedelic bubblegum, and punk covers in a converted Episcopalian church. By the summer, the band had settled on the name R.E.M. after flipping randomly through the dictionary. Around the same time, the band met Jefferson Holt, who became their manager after witnessing the group's first out-of-state concert in North Carolina. Eventually, the band members dropped out of school to concentrate on their musical career.

Over the next year and a half, R.E.M. toured throughout the South, playing a variety of garage rock covers and folk-rock originals. At the time, the band was still learning how to play, as Buck began to develop his distinctive, arpeggiated jangle and Stipe ironed out his cryptic lyrics. During the summer of 1981, R.E.M. recorded their first single, "Radio Free Europe", at Mitch Easter's Drive-In Studios. Released on the local indie label Hib-Tone, "Radio Free Europe" was pressed in a run of only 1,000 copies. The single became a hit on college radio and topped the Village Voice's year-end poll of Best Independent Singles. Their country/folk sound was contradicted by a driving bassline and an urgency that suggested The Who in their early mod phase. Paired with the distinctive voice of Stipe and his inaudible and indecipherable lyrics, R.E.M.'s sound was unique in the post-punk era of the early 1980s.
