The Mars Volta - Live E.P. (2003) (@192)

A four-track, 40-minute EP of live material recorded in London, Live illustrates the art rock and jam-band underpinnings of avant metal's most intriguing act, the Mars Volta. The EP begins with two tracks recorded live at BBC studios in Maida Vale, including a version of "Roulette Dares" with copious echo and some testifying organ work. "Drunkship of Lanterns" appears with all the stop-start action expected from heavy rockers ranging from King Crimson to Fugazi. The final two tracks are live in concert, and prove that Mars Volta function just as well in traditional live venues as in the controlled surroundings of the studio. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

2 Drunkship of Lanterns (9:38)

The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia (2006)

Produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, The Pixies, Hole) and recorded over several weeks at Allaire Studios (a converted turn-of-the-century mansion in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York), Yes, Virginia is a rich tapestry that showcases the band's road-sharpened musical chemistry and digs deep into recesses of the human heart usually considered taboo. Songs like "Sex Changes" and "Dirty Business" blast listeners with earsplitting Marshall Stack Power and explore the pathology of identity crisis. Torch cousins "First Orgasm" and "Me & The Minibar" finds Palmer back alone at her piano, delicately unfolding her pained confessions. Viglione solidifies his place in the Drummer Pantheon as he delivers mind-boggling fills and flourishes on fast-and-furious tunes "Modern Moonlight" and "Necessary Evil." On "Mrs. O," a slightly cryptic mid-tempo ballad about the re-writing of history, Palmer takes on the dangerous character of a holocaust-denying old woman with the words "There's No Hitler and No Holocaust/No Winter and No Santa Claus/And Yes, Virginia, All Because/The Truth Won't Save You Now..." This line, and the title of the record itself, is a reference to the now-famous 1897 New York Sun letter to the editor in which 8-year old Virginia O'Hanlon questions the existence of Santa Claus. Palmer's ambiguous reaches at answering life's impossible questions รข whether about identity, loneliness or technology - may echo dark, but underneath lies a timid optimism and a childlike wonder.

Visage:Visage

Mid-price reissue of 1980 new wave classic. Ten tracks including the classic, 'Fade To Grey'.
Visage is the debut album from UK-based New Romantic ensemble Visage.Eight musicians had worked in this album. As you know Barry Adamson was playing bass guitars of Visage.

Strange and drummer/nightclub partner Rusty Egan had wisely surrounded themselves with top-level talent, primarily drawn from the bands Ultravox and Magazine, and the excellent playing of contributors like guitarists Midge Ure and John McGeoch, bassist Barry Adamson, synthesist Dave Formula, and, especially, electric violinist Billy Currie, all of whom give the album a depth unmatched by most contemporaneous techno-pop.

Calexico & Iron and Wine – In The Reigns

In the Reins is a joint EP by Calexico and Iron & Wine, released by Overcoat Recordings on September 13, 2005. Iron & Wine's Sam Beam wrote all of the songs, which were recorded by the two bands together at Wavelab Studio in Tucson, Arizona.

Calexico had its origins in 1990 when Burns, who was studying music at the University of California, Irvine, met up with Convertino, who was playing drums with Howe Gelb in Giant Sand. Burns joined them, after first playing upright bass on a European tour. Giant Sand moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1994. John and Joey formed the Friends of Dean Martin (later the Friends of Dean Martinez) which scored a record deal with Sub Pop. However, the pair split up with Bill Elm, the co-founder of The Friends of Dean Martinez in 1996. The band subsequently became a kind of indie rhythm section for hire, working with the likes of Victoria Williams, Barbara Manning and Richard Buckner before forming Calexico.

Johnny Cash - Unearthed Box Set (Again)

Over the course of five mesmerizing CDs, Unearthed shows us just how Johnny Cash's now-legendary handful of recordings for American Records came to be. Four discs feature previously unreleased tracks from the famed Rick Rubin-produced sessions. Through their inconsistencies and quirks (and, more often than not, brilliance), they shed light on how Cash's final records were shaped, edited, and produced. Here we get some creative pairings: Fiona Apple providing guest vocals on Cat Stevens' "Father & Son," and the late Joe Strummer duetting with Cash on Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." Neither are the definitive statements that some of Cash's covers from this period are (his glorious takes on Nick Lowe and Danzig, to name just two), but they're still very much worth hearing. Most riveting are the numerous traditional numbers, the songs that were clearly closest to the Man in Black's heart. "Banks of the Ohio," Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Chunk of Coal," Stephen Foster's "Hard Times," and the entire disc of previously unreleased gospel tunes are powerful statements, tunes where you feel privileged to hear Cash--despite declining health and failing voice--sing one more time, the way he wanted. The last disc of this monumental set is a "best-of" compilation of tracks that did make it on the American individual discs, a reminder of just how groundbreaking these sessions were. Perhaps the biggest highlight in this awe-inspiring set is its vast liner notes, a loving collection of essays and recollections that highlight the history and stories behind this eclectic array of songs. --Jason Verlinde

The Byrds - Byrdmaniax with bonus tracks

Byrdmaniax is an album by American band The Byrds, released in 1971. It remains one of their most poorly received, largely in part due to the heavy strings producer Terry Melcher poured on many of the tracks, reportedly while The Byrds were on the road and without their approval.

Upon release, Byrdmaniax did much to undo the critical standing The Byrds had earned thanks to Ballad of Easy Rider and (Untitled) and it faded quickly from the public's consciousness, only reaching forty-six in the United States in a short chart stay, and failing to reach the United Kingdom charts at all.

Metallica - All albums,acustic,Live albums

Metallica was formed in Downey, California in 1981 by drummer and son of a former tennis prodigy, Lars Ulrich, along with guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield who he met after each had separately placed classified advertisements in the AmericanThe Recycler. Ulrich, who had been influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, tried to start his own band before 1981 but was unsuccessful.

After building a loyal following through its role in the development of modern heavy metal, especially thrash metal (the most successful of the "big four" of thrash metal, which also included Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax) in the mid-1980s, the band broadened its audience in the early 1990s. Since then, the band has stood as the most commercially visible example of the metal genre.

Lou Reed:Berlin

Berlin is a 1973 album by Lou Reed, his third solo album and the follow-up to the widely accessible and upbeat glam rock classic Transformer. What was surprising about this release was that it is in direct contrast to its predecessor: Berlin is a very bleak and sad album, widely believed to be among the most depressing albums ever recorded. In 2003, the album was ranked number 344 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

On the other side of the coin, it is also ranked among the best of the concept albums the 1970s had to offer, a tragic, loose musical tale about a doomed couple amid themes of drug use and depression. Response was not good upon its release, as fans and critics were expecting another upbeat glam outing. As time has gone by, a growing number of Reed's fans have come to believe this album to be among his best as a solo artist.

Useful notes:Lewis Allen "Lou" Reed (born March 2, 1942) is an American rock and roll singer-songwriter, originally from Brooklyn, New York.

Deus Discography

dEUS is an indie rock band based in Antwerp, Belgium, consisting of Tom Barman (vocals and guitar), Klaas Janzoons (keyboards and violin), and Stephane Misseghers (drums), Alan Gevaert (bass) and Mauro Pawlowski (guitar).

The band, whose songs are primarily sung in English, was formed in Antwerp in the late 1980s, and displayed a bewildering array of influences, including Captain Beefheart, Mingus-style jazz, Leonard Cohen and the Velvet Underground. Consequently, they incorporate a wide variety of styles, including Pop, Punk and Heavy Metal into their work. They became one of the most successful (and influential) Belgian rock bands ever.

Roxy Music:Avalon

Avalon, released in 1982, was Roxy Music's eighth and last studio album; it is generally regarded as the culmination of the smoother, more adult-oriented sound of the band's later work. It was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and staying on the album charts for over a year; a single, "More Than This," was also a Top 10 hit in Britain and other European countries. The same song was also a minor hit in the US, especially on the college radio circuit.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 307 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It is one of four Roxy Music albums that made the list (Siren, For Your Pleasure and Country Life being the others).

The lush arrangements and synthesizer drenched sound of Avalon later found its way onto Bryan Ferry's solo follow-up album Boys and Girls (1985).

"The Main Thing", an album track from Avalon, was also used in a 2006 television advertisement for the Vauxhall Vectra, which was based around football and featured Pierluigi Collina. Pianos were added to the track in the advertisement version

Siouxsie & the Banshees:The Rapture

Siouxsie and the Banshees (pronounced like the name 'Susie') were a British punk/Post-punk band. Their musical career also encompassed the gothic rock and new wave genres.
The Rapture is the eleventh and final studio album by Siouxsie & the Banshees. Released in 1995 by Geffen Records, the album received mostly poor reviews from critics and a less-than-lukewarm response from longtime fans. No significant chart singles came from the album, although two were released. With the Banshees, co-production work was performed by John Cale, known for his experimental work with The Velvet Underground and the late Nico. The album is notably the only Banshees release to be out of print.

The penultimate show of 1972, featuring a great audience and a note-perfect four-man Floyd. This is Man Of Leisure Music's new revision of the Zurich show... a very significant improvement, especially with that all-important encore of Childhood's End. Haven't compared it to the "2nd source", which apparently has more tune-ups before Dark Side, but it doesn't get much better than this as far as sound quality is concerned.

10,000 Maniacs

10,000 Maniacs - In My Tribe (1987)

In My Tribe is the fourth album and second major-label album by folk-rock band 10,000 Maniacs. It was their breakthrough album. The Kinks – The ultimate collection

The Kinks were a British rock group. They first gained prominence in the mid-1960s on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me". Originally consisting of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory and bassist Peter Quaife. The core of the group over the years has remained the Davies brothers. With Ray's splendid songwriting skills and 'mockney' vocals, Dave's impressive guitar work and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the most influential groups of British rock and the "British Invasion" of America.
It is ironic that one of Britain's most enduring and respected bands, spawned from the beat boom of the early 60s, received, for the best part of two decades, success, adulation and financial reward in the USA. This most "English" institution was able to fill stadiums in any part of the USA or Europe, while in their homeland Britain, a few thousand devotees watched their heroes perform in comparatively small clubs or halls. This reflected mostly in Davies' songwriting, where he mocked the British gluttonous aristocracy and philistinism.
For a brief period in the mid-'60s, the band rivalled The Rolling Stones as the second most popular British group behind only The Beatles. Just as the group were starting their artistic best, internal squabbles, conflicts with the music industry, and an untimely ban from touring the United States eroded their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic. However, they experienced popular fan revivals in the late-70s and early-80s and today they are credited as founding fathers of genres as diverse as Britpop, punk rock and heavy metal.

The Clash - The Essential Clash

Some would argue that if you only wanted two Clash discs in your collection, you should skip this 40-track overview and pick up The Clash and London Calling instead. No matter how transcendent those two albums are -- and they are among the very greatest popular music of the 20th century -- that overlooks the fact that the group had many, many great songs not on either album, including "Safe European Home," "Stay Free," "Bankrobber," "Rock the Casbah," "Straight to Hell," "This Is Radio Clash," and "Should I Stay or Should I Go," to begin with. That's where this 2003 compilation comes in. It fills in many of the gaps between those two records, while summarizing The Clash and London Calling well, providing a first-rate overview of the greatest punk band. It's not quite perfect, however: some great singles and B-sides fall through the cracks (notably "Gates of the West," "Jail Guitar Doors," "The Call Up," "Armagedion Time," "The Prisoner," "Protex Blue") and the Sandinista! selections feel nearly as haphazard as the album itself. Nevertheless, this does provide the best, most extensive and logical overview of the band yet assembled, and it's worthwhile not just as an introduction, but as a terrific listen.

Grunge

Grunge
Using the sludgy, murky sound of the Stooges and Black Sabbath as a foundation, Grunge was a hybrid of heavy metal and punk. Though the guitars were straight from early '70s metal, the aesthetic of grunge was far from metal. Both the lyrical approach and musical attack of grunge were adopted from punk, particularly the independent ideals of early '80s American hardcore. The first wave of grunge bands -- Green River, Mudhoney, Soundgarden -- were heavier than the second, which began with Nirvana. Nirvana was more melodic than their predecessors and they also had signature stop-start dynamics, which became a genre convention nearly as recognizable as fuzzy, distorted guitars. After Nirvana crossed over into the mainstream, grunge lost many of its independent and punk connections and became the most popular style of hard rock in the '90s.

Scorpions - Box of Scorpions

Scorpions are a hard rock band from Hanover, Germany, best known for their single
"Wind of Change'' and their 80's rock anthem, "Rock You Like A Hurricane". Contrary to common usage, the band's name is "Scorpions" and not "The Scorpions

Contrary to common usage, the band's name is "Scorpions" and not "The Scorpions". Their classic 1975 power ballad "In Trance" was covered by Progressive Metal band Fates Warning as a hidden track on the Japanese version of their 1998 live album "Still Life." Their song "Don't Stop at the Top" was covered by melodic death metal band Children of Bodom as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Something Wild. "Rock You Like A Hurricane" is played before the start of Carolina Hurricanes hockey games as the team takes the ice. The band were given several mentions on the BBC Coverage of the 2006 World Cup, a small featurette on the band was shown as a tour of Hannover, their Home City was given by the presenter. The song 'Wind of Change' was played to footage of the Berlin wall falling, much as it was at the time.

Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac (formed in 1967) is an influential and commercially successful British-American Blues, rock,Pop band that has had a revolving door of personnel, and varied levels of success.

Rumours is a rock and roll album released by Fleetwood Mac in 1977. It was the second album recorded with this lineup, following the successful self-titled Fleetwood Mac album. In December 1976, prior to the release of the album, Reprise released the single "Go Your Own Way" b/w "Silver Springs."

The Dance is a live performance by the band Fleetwood Mac, released on CD and VHS in 1997, later on DVD. (see 1997 in music). It is a recording of a "Mac" reunion concert in Burbank, CA, with the University of Southern California Marching Band assisting on "Tusk" and "Don't Stop".

Tusk was a double album released in 1979 (see 1979 in music) by Fleetwood Mac. Considered somewhat "quirky" due to Lindsey Buckingham's apparent attempts to allow punk rock and New Wave influence into his work, Tusk did not achieve the level of success of its predecessor, Rumours.

Greatest Hits is a 1988 album by British-American band Fleetwood Mac. It covers the period of the band's greatest commercial success, from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s.

It should not be confused with an early 1970s release by the Peter Green incarnation of the band, also entitled "Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits", but containing an entirely different tracklisting

Jesus and Mary Chain

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy
About a decade after its release, William Reid of the Mary Chain described Psychocandy as "one of the greatest records ever made". The remark is indicative of a) William Reid's chronic immodesty where his band are concerned and b) the unarguable truth. Every indie guitar group since that has tried to either lend portent to a sweet melody by drenching it in feedback or render a messy guitar wipe-out palatable by stringing a semblance of a tune through it--and that's all of them--got the idea from Psychocandy. Given that it has been reinvented, borrowed from and downright burgled continuously since its release, it is further testament to Psychocandy that it still sounds so fresh in its own right. William and Jim Reid displayed from the off an innate understanding of how best to balance their acute melodic sense with the racket that emerged from their guitar amplifiers. "Some Candy Talking" and "Just Like Honey" are just two of the tracks which, it seems reasonable to believe, would have drawn applause from both Brian Wilson and John Cage. --Andrew Mueller

Brian Ferry - Bete Noire

Bryan Ferry
Bรชte Noire (November 1987)

Bรชte Noire is an album by British singer Bryan Ferry, released on Virgin Records in November 1987.

The album was co-produced by Patrick Leonard, and was intended to increase Ferry's commercial stature in the United States. "Kiss and Tell" was his only Top 40 hit in the United States; the song also appears in the film Bright Lights, Big City. The album's second single, "The Right Stuff", was co-written with Johnny Marr and adapted from an instrumental B-side by The Smiths, "Money Changes Everything"

Sex Pistols - Kiss This (Greatest Hits)

The greatest single disc compilation of the greatest band that has ever existed.
Originally packaged 2gether with the Live in Trondheim disc.

Aussie reissue of 1992 compilation includes all the tracks off their classic 1977 debut 'Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols'. 17 tracks split into three phases, 'Early Songs And Other People's Material', 'Let Rip, Volatile, Full Fledged Songwriting On our Own' & 'Final group Of Songs Written Close Together. More Musical. No Longer Confused About Where We Stood.

he Sex Pistols were, despite their short existence, a very influential English punk band. While of the later set of English punks The Clash were perhaps more articulate and politically motivated, The Damned more versatile, and Buzzcocks had more astute pop sensibilities, the Pistols achieved more recognition through their iconic punk rock passion and flamboyancy, and no other Punk band of the era made such a lasting impression on British popular culture.

Alice Cooper - The Definitive Alice Cooper

AMG Review
In 2001, the U.S. received the 22-track Alice Cooper compilation Mascara and Monsters: The Best of Alice Cooper, while the rest of the world got the 21-track The Definitive Alice Cooper. Besides different album cover artwork, the difference between the two releases is minor, as the track listing is similar for the most part (save a few tracks). For a single-disc overview of Cooper's career from 1971 through 1991, The Definitive Alice Cooper is a fine set, as all of the original shock rocker's hits are present, as well as a few strong album cuts. Kudos to the gents who assembled this collection for mixing in such underrated early-'70s gems as the epic "Halo of Flies" and "Generation Landslide," which measure up nicely alongside such bona fide hits as "I'm Eighteen," "Under My Wheels," "School's Out," and "No More Mr. Nice Guy." The quality of the tunes dips a bit for the last nine songs (due to the fact that Cooper dismissed his original stellar backing band in favor of a solo career), especially when such blah ballads as "I Never Cry," "You and Me," and "How You Gonna See Me Now" are put back to back to back (as well as such latter-day spotty rockers as "Poison" and "Hey Stoopid"). But if you want a collection of Cooper's best known tracks throughout a large portion of his career, The Definitive Alice Cooper is a wise choice.

Metallica - Kill' em All

Released in 1983, Kill 'Em All was the first album to completely feature everything that made the nascent Bay Area thrash metal scene so unique. The record's release saw many imitators and followers release albums in its wake, and set the band that made it on the path to "world domination", as drummer Lars Ulrich would put it in the following year.

The album reaches furious speeds on every track (discounting the Cliff Burton bass solo "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth"), a testament to the band's early influences: Diamond Head, Motรถrhead and Venom, all English bands who combined the heaviness and technicality of Black Sabbath with the speed and aggression of punk rock. This made the band a total anomaly in the early 1980s heavy metal scene in the USA. The band wear their influences on their sleeve, and shades of tracks like Diamond Head's "Dead Reckoning" can be heard in "Seek & Destroy".

Pearl Jam - Ten

Nirvana's Nevermind may have been the album that broke grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream, but there's no underestimating the role that Pearl Jam's Ten played in keeping them there. Nirvana's appeal may have been huge, but it wasn't universal; rock radio still viewed them as too raw and punky, and some hard rock fans dismissed them as weird misfits. In retrospect, it's easy to see why Pearl Jam clicked with a mass audience — they weren't as metallic as Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, and of Seattle's Big Four, their sound owed the greatest debt to classic rock. With its intricately arranged guitar textures and expansive harmonic vocabulary, Ten especially recalled Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. But those touchstones might not have been immediately apparent, since — aside from Mike McCready's Clapton/Hendrix-style leads — every trace of blues influence has been completely stripped from the band's sound. Though they rock hard, Pearl Jam is too anti-star to swagger, too self-aware to puncture the album's air of gravity. Pearl Jam tackles weighty topics — abortion, homelessness, childhood traumas, gun violence, rigorous introspection — with an earnest zeal unmatched since mid-'80s U2, whose anthemic sound they frequently strive for. Similarly, Eddie Vedder's impressionistic lyrics often make their greatest impact through the passionate commitment of his delivery rather than concrete meaning. His voice had a highly distinctive timbre that perfectly fit the album's warm, rich sound, and that's part of the key — no matter how cathartic Ten's tersely titled songs got, they were never abrasive enough to affect the album's accessibility. Ten also benefited from a long gestation period, during which the band honed the material into this tightly focused form; the result is a flawlessly crafted hard rock masterpiece.

Ten is Pearl Jam's first album, released on August 27, 1991 through Epic Records.

In 1998 Q magazine readers voted Ten the 54th greatest album of all time; in 2003 the TV network VH1 placed it at number 79. It is number 207 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

While the song "Black" charted #3 on the Mainstream Rock charts, it was never actually released as a single.

Hard-Fi - Stars of Cctv (2005)

Stars Of CCTV is the debut album from Surrey-based Indie rockers Hard-Fi. Fusing together a host of influences, including Happy Mondays-esque baggy, sun kissed Ibizan grooves and even classic two-tone ska, Hard-Fi have crafted an album that buzzes with raw energy and enthusiasm, celebrating the best of British pop culture. Includes the singles 'Cash Machine', 'Tied Up Too Tight' and 'Hard To Beat'. It was first released on 4 July 2005 (see 2005 in music) on Necessary/Atlantic and Warner Music UK. It was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize, and reached #1 in the UK albums chart in January 2006.

A-Ha - Analogue

Short bio:a-ha is a Norwegian New Wave band who were most popular in the UK and the USA during the 1980s, but continued to be globally successful in the 1990s and 2000s. The trio, composed of lead vocalist Morten Harket, guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formed in 1983 and left Norway for London in order to make a career in the music business. The origin of the name a-ha comes from the title of an early song. Originally, Paul had used the word 'a-ha' as the title of a song.

Review:Every track on this album really deserves a mention, but you wouldn't want to read that so I'll be brief. 'Birthright' shows exactly what this album is made of, beautifully melodic piano topped by the most perfectly sung lyrics and backed up with some subdued drumming. A well placed Moog synth in the chorus adds emphasis and importance, inspired song writing indeed. Analogue shows real maturity from a-Ha making them seem far removed from the floppy haired synth pop group of the 80's grown.

As their previous record shows a-Ha are legendary pop stars but with this album they have proved their ability as song writers. Analogue is out now so go check out a copy or see them live in December around London.

Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On (1969)

Then Play On is the fourth album by blues rock band Fleetwood Mac, first released in September 1969 (see 1969 in music). It is often considered the best album by the Peter Green lineup of the band, and one of the best rock albums of the late 1960s. It was the first of their original albums to feature Danny Kirwan and the last with Peter Green. Jeremy Spencer did not feature on the album apart from "a couple of piano things" Mick Fleetwood told Q Magazine in 1990.

The album has been released with four different song lineups. The current CD lineup compiles all songs from the two US LP lineups, both of which were deviations from the original UK song order.
